Protecting fruit from birds/squirrels

I have two fruit cages with semi rigid plastic net sides and a soft net roof. Last year I suffered greatly from mice, squirrels eating holes in the plastic and wasps. This year is completely different. No squirrels yet, nor mice, the wasp season is yet to come.

Walking up the garden I spied a baby long tailed tit fluffing about inside the cage. I opened the door told it it was silly and encouraged it out, failing miserably. All the while looking for the hole round the sides where it might have gotten in. Then lo and behold, the little bird stuck it's head through the soft net roof and squeezed itself out through the mesh. I hope I doesn't tell its mates.
Gardening is an excuse not to do housework
