I have an avocado stone in a container of water in the seed propagator. 
I tried it initially in an egg cup but it swelled up and I struggled to get it out again! 
I keep changing the water daily and it comes roughly half way up the stone. I don't know which part of the stone sends out a root or a shoot though?
