2026 - What I did today.

Finally got round to planting out broad bean plants. They were very leggy and gasping for some freedom. I had some very manky saved seed, so foolishly just chucked them into a seed tray with a bit of old compost and forgot them. They all popped and thrived. Now I have more BB than I know what to do with. I might pester my neighbour, see if he wants some.

Potted on a few tomatoes. Pruned some fruit bushes, pottered about in the sunshine.

It’s not rained all day (so far) . I’ve finished digging out the ditch (it will be a path eventually) that had all grown in with weeds. Covered it with weed fabric. Started filling it with the stones I pulled up out of it while weeding. Mostly to pin the fabric down as much as anything. Also levelled the edge of the eye bed. So the edging stones have a fighting chance of staying where I put them. The levels change quite quickly at this point in the garden. Moved the edging stones I started putting round the eye bed last year. On top of the weed fabric on the newly levelled edge. Weeded / re dugout the eye bed. It’s now also covered in weed fabric until I get round to splitting more rocks.

I still have to dig the ditch / path right to the fence. Don’t want to do that until I’ve got the gravel to fill it. It’ll just fill with mud again as it’s skews race track.

Sowed some soaked peas. Started putting up pea/bean supports. Started weeding top fruit cage, again. If its not bittercress, its speedwell! BAH, I can't win.

First days rock splitting of the year. It didn’t start well. With the hardest rock me or Bob have ever encountered. Managed to split it into 2 big pieces. We’re not attempting to split it any further. Need new set of feathers & wedges now. 2 got bent and 1 snapped. The second rock was going better until I got called into work.

Mowed a bit then washed a car - first time in well over 10 years. It wasn't cause of the lichens and moss growing on it but a small bird, probably a robin, has started using its side mirror on the drivers side and window as a toilet. It has likely been seeing its reflection and not liking what it sees - a competitor as big as itself.

A couple of years ago, there were Blue or Great tits attacking their reflection in the wingmirror on my car. and making a mess.  I put a stocking over the mirror to stop them. If you have any stockings, you could try that. Big Grin
