OK, every body above seems th think they have got them all.

My guesses are:

1 orange tip
2 clouded yellow
3 peacock
4 comma
5 speckled wood
6 small blue
7 holly blue
8 small tortoise shell
9 brimstone
10 chequered skipper
11 green hairstreak
12 painted lady

and the book I used was British Wildlife (Arlott = 2)

I agree with SC - whose initials happen to match "small copper" Big Grin

I racked my aging biologist memory for the answers, then double-checked with Wikipedia that I wasn't imagining/mis-remembering them!
