Amaryllis - Small chilli - 26-11-2025

I remember as a kid my Nan always used to have an amaryllis around Christmas. I remember because I always had to have my photo taken next to it to show how tall it was or how short I was  Wink . I’ve grown a couple in the past. Really wanted to grow another one. So while Bob was collecting a miss placed order from Oban (don’t ask) on Friday. I got him to get one from Lidl for me.
It’s going to be a miracle if it survives the dogs tail or doesn’t grow so tall that it’s squashed against the caravan ceiling.
Here it is [attachment=8581].

I’m measuring how much it grows each day. Yesterday it had grown 4cm. It now stands at 28cm. I think that’s a centimetre taller over night.

The other thing I’m expecting to happen. Is it to flower while I’m away for a couple of days the middle of next month.
Anyone else growing amaryllis?

RE: Amaryllis - Veggie - 26-11-2025

I have about 6 from previous years that often surprise me by flowering again. Not at this time of year, though - usually in summer.

If I see them cheap after Christmas I buy them then - or acquire other people's cast-offs about then too.
Before you ask, I just remove the flower stalk and let them die back naturally. Bung them in the GH and let them dry out. When I see a little green spike appearing, I start watering, maybe a bit of feed too.
I think Amaryllis are great fun - they seem to grow while you watch. I always bought my Mum one.

How did you know I was going to be asking about how to keep them after flowering  Big Grin . I definitely want to keep this (and any other) going for as many years as possible.
I do have my eye on several on farmer Gracy. But I’m waiting till I have a house and more polytunnel space. They are some lovely colours. I remember my Nan having red , pink, and a 2 tone pink in different years. I think this one is white. Well that’s what colour was of the one flowering on the plastic sleeve.

You're right there. I remember that one, granny used to sing it as she reached for the Gin and Dubonnet.  'Easy on  the tonic dear, I like to taste the gin' was her mantra  Big Grin
