What do you call the bits of batter that fall off the fish when its deep fried? We call them Scrumps and, as kids, we'd get them free from the chip shop if we took them some newspapers for wrapping the food.

M&S/Ocado call them Scraps and sell them for £1.60!

Yeah we called them scraps as well. I never actually had any. I was never allowed.

There is money to be made on everything if it’s marketed right  (and if you have no morals in some cases)

We called them batter bits and asked for them on top of the fish or in the bag of chips, never had to pay for them. You see, Waitrose will soon be charging for the spent coffee grounds they currently offer for free.

We called them 'scratchings' but also called pork belly rind scratchings. It's a waste product so chippies were usually glad to get rid of it offering it to you for no charge. If they were to try to selli t to me I would tell them to stuff it!

Scraps and when produced in a chip shop are a waste product they want rid of. When made for certain companies they are no longer just scraps, they are hand crafted, organically sourced, fair trade, deep fried in oil sourced from an artisan small holding, hand pressed rape seed oil...scraps.

Anyone else remember when pilchards weren't selling so someone started calling them cornish sardines?

RE: Its not waste if you sell it! - Veggie - 24-11-2023

Yes, I remember that, Jimny.
Maybe its time to invent some new, catchy names for other things.
For example, the dust and fluff inside the vacuum cleaner becomes "Compost accelerant".........not very catchy, I admit, but it may catch a few innocents if its packaged in an eye catching way and given plenty of exposure on social media. Big Grin
