Nasturtiums - Veggie - 05-05-2023

Question for the panel please.
Do Climbing Nasturtiums really climb or do they need tying to trellis, canes, wire, whatever? In other words, are they scramblers across the ground that can be persuaded to "climb"?
The packet of "Climbing Mix" that I have says they "easily cover sheds and walls or trail in baskets". Seems a bit boastful to me. I don't want to sow anything that requires TLC.

Veggie mine are ordinary nasturtiums and they climb amongst the sweet peas on the wigwam and up trellis without any help from me. So I presume climbing ones will be even better.

A link to an older photo of mine.

Interesting. I've managed to get some nasturtiums to grow for the first time this year and the answers to this will help me decide where they eventually go.

Thanks Bren. I remember your photo now - looks lovely.

I call mine “sprawlers”.

They like it here - and self sow everywhere.
Not complaining  though. I really like them

Nasturtiums again! I've found lots of T&M nasturtium seed packets (other makes are also available). Sowing dates on the packets are March to May.
Since nasturtiums are self seeders I assume the seeds lie dormant over winter and germinate in spring with the warmer weather. On that basis, I could sow nasturtium seeds now and let them wake up when the weather is right instead of keeping them in the house overwinter. I'm not holding out much hope for these T&M seeds anyway so I'm going to give them a chance now, rather than in spring. I have some other "makes" that can wait until spring.
