RE: Vinny's Allotment Plot - Vinny - 16-07-2025 Nothing exciting today at plot. Lots of hand weeding, munching on some of the remaining strawberries then ditto with raspberries. Harvestd the elephant garlic which isn't much bigger than normal garlic, but left a few in the bed that were flowering just to see what happens? I watered my two potted Alstromeria in greenhouse. These are sighted under a missing pane of glass so do get some water from the rain! My greenhouse gapevine thinks it's autumn and has stopped growing and the leaves have started to turn yellow? My fingers and palms of my hand are now tingling with pulling nettles and thistles out! I did go to Helens grave first which was weedy so used a trowel to flick out weeds (couldn't find any weed & feed whilst shopping) and threw a box of a grass seed/fertiliser mix over the area to hopefully green it up? Also took a bunch of flowers and a gallon of water as for some reason they knock the water off at the graveyard during the summer??? RE: Vinny's Allotment Plot - Vinny - 25-07-2025 Back at plot today mainly to pick some blackcurrants for jam (Thanks for reminding me JJB) I took a large bowl and filled it easily from one bush. In fact the bush was so laden with fruit I could have easily filled another ten bowls. The bush was a self seeded blackcurrant that I allowed to stay. No idea where it came from or it's variety, but it's certainly a heavy cropper! The easiest way I found was to snap branches off then strip them of blackcurrants, so I was effectively pruning bush at the same time. When I looked aroud I couldn't believe how many weeds were in evidence. The last ime I hoed paths I left weeds lying to shrivel up in the sun. Instead, we have had a lot of rain (water butts full) ![]() ![]() Once again, I went around all paths with hoe and with a warm weekend forecast hopefully my earlier plan will work this time? I also harvested a couple of green round courgettes and a couple of yellow round courgettes, along with a carrier bag full of onions to be given to my Daughter. I did a bit of hand weeding on the larger weeds in the beds before they spread there seed all over the place. Still lots of weeding to do but it will have to wait until another day as my back started to object! ![]() There are still loads of onions to harvest and the beds to fill with summat else for the winter? My favourite area of wild flowers and flowers for the bees is a joy to behold and I took a photo of it. It may upload it may not, but I will give it a try! Called at shop and bought 2lb of sugar to make some blackcurant jam with! I might take a leaf out of your book and try it myself. RE: Vinny's Allotment Plot - Vinny - 31-07-2025 Only one on site today! Only popped in to check on things and finished up doing two hour hand weeding! I can see my scorzonera (Black Salsify) plants now that I have pulled the weeds out around them. Once again I just dropped weeds onto paths so hopefully the sun will frazzle them and they won't root again! I strted off with one bed, then another beckoned and before I new it I had hand weeded most of the beds. The flowers are still looking nice and appear to be making a second flowering in some cases? Some of the onions are decent but a lot will be pickling onions or used in making Greek Stifado methinks as they are quite small? The leeks are pathetic and the Elephant garlic are rubbish! I have a theory about this which is adopted by the champion leek growers. Vegetatively grown leeks grow bigger, but only for a couple of years when they start to deteriorate (similar to cloning) and have to be grown from seed? This could be why the elephant garlic has deriorated, or it could have been the dry spring? I dont know. RE: Vinny's Allotment Plot - Vinny - 02-08-2025 Called at plot again on my way home from excercise routines.(Thats two days in a row) ![]() ![]() |
