Yet another onion set thread

Last year many of my cheapo (poundland) onion sets bolted. The seed sown ones, whilst smaller, didn't.  I'm planning on sowing some seed onions today to give them a bit longer growing period than last year.

I noticed D T Brown advertising heat treated sets at an eye-watering price compared to Poundland or Home Bargains.  What's the team think of heat treated onion sets and have you used them to advantage.  TBH no matter the advantage I can't see me forking out £9.70 for 160 ish sets plus p&p when I can get the equivalent for a couple of quid. Plus I don't need 160.

  Heated propagator

Any recommendations on heated propagators ?
I really don’t think mine is doing well. To be fair it’s knocking on a bit and was one of the cheapest on the market.
I wouldn’t mind upgrading to something with temperature control. If anyone can recommend anything. Or even point me in the right direction.
Thank you  Smile

  Theme song

Do you have a song which is meaningful for you? You can change the words as appropriate!

As I walked into Aldi this morning, my song popped into my mind and I can't get rid of it now!

"The minute you walked in the shop,
I could see you liked reductions
A real No Spender.
Scruffy looking, face so lined,
I'd kinda like to know what's going on in your mind

So let me get straight to the point
I don't open my purse
For every bargain I see
Hey No Spender, spend a little money on me.

  Favourite

What is your favourite vegetable? Is your favourite the same for growing & eating? Or do you have a different one for each? Does your favourite have to be a particular variety or are you happy to generalise?

I’m finding this a very difficult one to answer myself.

For growing it’s definitely cucurbit. Narrowed down to pumpkin/ squash/ courgette.  I’ll have to have a think, to see if I can narrow it down any further. As for eating tromb is definitely up there because it’s so versatile. But the same could be said for pumpkins, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and spuds to name but a few    Huh Blush . Also needs some more thinking about.

Are you as indecisive as me or do you know your favourites?

  Venus & Crescent Moon

When I looked to the sky last night I wondered what the star was close to the crescent moon? I've just read in the news that it was Venus. It was a clear night and I think I also spotted the red planet Mars, some distance away?
We are close to all the planets being in line and with these frosty nights I may look out for it?

I am not ususally a stargazer but this one deffinately caught my eye! Big Grin

  New Years Resolutions 2025
Posted by: Vinny - 01-01-2025, 08:34 PM - Replies (5)

My resolutiions are to cut out alcohol and cut out carbs, mainly biscuits & sweets. I have not had a lot of alcohol to drink this year  but was given alcohol and sweets at Christmas which I have been drinking. Over the last few weeks through not excercising and pigging out on drink and sweet stuff I have noticed my weight go up a few pounds. I also don't feel as good as I was.
I can't wait to get back to excercising this weekend and have ditchd the alcohol and sweet stuff to see how it goes.I have also lowered the amount of steps I do daily from about 12000 to 8000 (this could be because of the crap weather whilst waling Kato) I also read that the 10000 norm should not be applied to the older generation because of wear on joints etc? Still not sure whether this is right or not,but it sounds feasible?
Years ago I used to be a big drinker but managed to get it down to maybe a bottle of broon whilst watching Newcastle play, but as from now, for at least this month I'm tee total. (Chi tea from tea bags , that is!)

Anyone else made resolutions?
