Growing sunflowers with peas or beans
Posted by: Spec - 10-04-2021, 06:40 PM - Replies (6)

I would like to grow sunflowers but I don't have a lot of space to do that, but wondered if I could use them as supports for either peas or runner beans, but not sure if it would work or what would be the better option of the two to try it with
Or do you think that possibly I have come across a bad influence Rolleyes

  Stones.

I am digging up loads of stones on my plot and wondered whether there were any good ideas of how to get rid of them or what I can use them for. Huh
I will probably have about three of four wheelbarrow loads up til now with the number increasing as the days go by. Confused

  'G' day tomorrow!

Going to move the window sill stuff into the allotment greenhouse(hence the G day) tomorrow as I can't wait any longer. I will put them on the greenhouse bench and build a frame around them which will be covered with thin opaque polystyrene (Laminate flooring underlay).
If I do perchance loose them, then so be it, I will have learned a lesson. Rolleyes

  Marrow v Courgette
Posted by: Broadway - 08-04-2021, 04:25 PM - Replies (11)

Hello Folks

I know this has been done before on other sites but I'd still like to know your thoughts.

So if I wanted larger fruit for particular recipes should I go with dedicated marrow or just let a few courgettes grow bigger?

  Growing beans and peas together
Posted by: Veggie - 07-04-2021, 05:58 PM - Replies (13)

French/Runner Beans twine around supports whereas peas like netting or summat to grab onto with their tendrils. What if that "summat" was a climbing bean?

In other words, can you think of a reason why I should, or shouldn't, grow beans and peas together on the same support? Smile

  Smoking!
Posted by: PyreneesPlot - 07-04-2021, 03:15 PM - Replies (19)

Having successfully smoked some trout once in the wok, Mr PP has bought me a smoker! It is one of those ones with fuel burners underneath so can/should be used outside. It even has a thermometer.

I'm happy with smoking fish, meat, cheese and tofu but wondered if anybody had smoked other things? Celeriac maybe?

Please share your ideas, recipes and photos Smile

  Dahlias 2021
Posted by: Scarlet - 06-04-2021, 09:08 AM - Replies (60)

So, I am slowly going through my dahlia tubers - I started planting up a couple of weeks ago.
Some of the tubers I got from the dahlia farm last year were huge so I've been cutting them up. Not sure I can plant them all. Anyway - some I can't ID yet - the flowers were too far gone. Feel free to have a go ?maybe they will tell us who they are when they flower late Summer.

What varieties are you growing?

A visit to Lip na cloiche
Posted by: Small chilli - 05-04-2021, 07:40 PM - Replies (32)

I went for a walk round Lip na cloiche this afternoon. It was a risk with the strong winds & snow showers. But it was lovely while we were there. And it was the most beautiful garden. Buy no means huge but on a steep slope so not easy gardening. Got some ideas for my new garden and I learned that there are so many different hellebore colours & sizes. I had no idea    Blush .

I highly recommend a visit if you’re ever on Mull. This is the view from the top of the garden

The view from the bottom of the garden, looking over newly planted trees & wild flowers (well it will be later in the year)
